Yesterday, I was so glad to represent UCU at the Yorkshire and Humber TUC rally in Leeds. The demo brought striking unions and supporters together for a march right through the centre of town, and we rallied before and after in front of our city’s iconic Town Hall. We will not apologise for fighting for better for ordinary people, and we will not apologise for defending our right to withdraw our labour. No one strikes lightly, and striking is always difficult, but we made clear that we will support each other and do all we can to protect the right to strike!
I have been on many marches through Leeds and spoken at many rallies and picket lines. We always do get support from the public at these, but yesterday was special – something is shifting in the public consciousness, I think. Young people who spotted their teachers ran over to join them on the march, all our leaflets were taken, and we received many cheers, rounds of applause, and lots of support from people in town.
Unity is strength!
